Many Tamil verbs come in pairs: one for something that happens by itself, one for doing it to something. The glass broke (உடைந்தது); he broke the glass (உடைத்தான்). Often the second one has a harder sound.
By itself · உடை (break (by itself))கண்ணாடி உடைந்தது.The glass broke.
To something · உடை (break (something))அவன் கண்ணாடியை உடைத்தான்.He broke the glass.
