When sounds double
வல்லினம் மிகும் இடங்கள்
When a word starting with க, ச, த or ப follows certain endings, its first consonant is written twice: மரத்தைப் பார்த்தேன். After others it is not. These are the rules that matter most in writing.
Doubles
After the object ending -ஐ.
After the ending -கு.
After அந்த, இந்த, எந்த.
After an infinitive (-அ).
After a joining form ending in -ய்.
After a joining form ending in -இ.
After a joining form with a doubled hard sound (-த்து, -ட்டு).
After -ஆக (-ly).
Doesn't double
Never after the subject.
Not after a joining form ending in a soft pair (-ந்து, -ன்று).
Not after -இன்.
Not after ஒரு (a, one).
Not after அது, இது used as a subject.
Not after a joining form ending in -ய்து.
